MILITARY RECRUITING
Jan 27, 2005
kpvi.com

The war on terror has Pentagon officials re-thinking how many people they need to recruit in certain arms of the military.

Air Force and Navy recruiters are lowering the number of people they are trying to enlist; while Army and Marine recruiters have seen their enlistment numbers soar.

Aaron Kunz was just at the Idaho Falls Guard Unit and tells us what's being done and why.

The Army slogan is "An Army of One". But with rebuilding efforts in Iraq, Army officials say they need to add a few more good soldiers to meet goals expected this year alone.

The rebuilding efforts in Iraq are underway after a year of fierce battles involving U-S soldiers; now American soldiers are being used in a different capacity and the Pentagon has announced they do what it takes to recruit new soldiers in 2005. The majority of those will come from the Army and the Marines.

Sergeant First Class Ed Vitacolonna/Idaho Falls Station Commander: "Just because of the roll the Army has, they are just trying to have the personnel to meet the demands that we have."

The total number of recruits has gone up; according to a spokesman at Fort Knox today, the total number of Army recruits nationwide for 2005 has risen. They plan on adding even more personnel in the next five years.

Sergeant First Class Ed Vitacolonna: "Yes, our numbers have been increased by 27 thousand."

Per year?

"Right."

That could be difficult for recruiters like Vitacolonna, so the U-S Government is stepping up enlistment incentives.

Sergeant First Class Ed Vitacolonna: "The college fund went from fifty thousand to seventy thousand; the bonus for Reservists, the max used to be eight thousand and now it's fifteen thousand, so we're trying to increase incentives for people to come in."

The Army says most of the Guard and Reserve units throughout the United States and Idaho are ready to be called to duty. Those called up are evenly distributed so others can stay stateside, always maintaining a balanced force within the U-S.

Sergeant First Class Ed Vitacolonna: "Pretty much all down the I-15 corridor through Salt Lake there are about sixty units. Most of the units are at least 80% or higher, and that's what they try to maintain is over 80%."

So why the Army rather than the Air Force or Navy? The Department of Defense says they need manpower. The Army and Marines offer just that, while the Air Force and Navy have more specialized service personnel.

Both of them say they will downsize and have offered bonus incentives for personnel who switch services to the Army or Marines.
