Becoming a net importer of food does seem quite strange. Please let me know when you have checked this statement out.

I cannot think of what we are eating that much of that is not grown in America. Asian rice? South American and Australia/New Zealand fruits during our winter months? Don't most Americans eat mainly sort of a sugary, partially hydrogenated oil, meat and potato-based diet? I know we grow plenty of them spuds right here in Idaho. Well, the whole Pacific Northwest, really.
