The People, once they discovered the power of the taxing authority as the "Santa Clause" can not be trusted to check the Congress from going apeshit. It's why any future appointment to the SCOTUS is of the first order of importance. Rehnquist, Scalia and Thomas, and to a lesser extent O'Connor, want to roll it back.

Not that it will ever happen, but it would be interesting to see the reaction of the conservatives, in particular, to such a roll back now that they are in power and in a position to impose their flavor of collectivism.

If someone were to write a Randish book showing a future where we really were free, it would be fascinating to see the reaction of the politicos.

Loss of freedom in not just in the taxes and "gratuities and doles" of collectivism but in other manifestations of majoritarianism.
