in the face of a 9-year string of success, we should roll out a draft tomorrow?

Of course not.

My (history based) prediction all along has been that we are going to see a shortfall in recruiting in the third year. I thought I was off a few months. I wasn't. It looks like the shortage began last quarter. Folks here have been posting articles indicating recruiting is fine and they were right. However, a prediction is not for present and past events, it is for future events.

Guess what, a shortfall in recruiting just raised its ugly head. If it is a one time - one or two month event or even a one or two quarter event, I agree it is meaningless. My advocacy for the draft has been to fill meaningful, serious shortages. I believe we are undermanned for the missions we have undertaken. That doesn't mean I think we need more troops in Iraq. It does mean I believe the overall world-wide deployment rate cannot be sustained. Any continuous recruiting shortfall is going to become serious quickly when viewed through that prism.

Months ago, I made the prediction that the shortfall is coming. Now I am providing evidence that the Reserves, National Guard and active Army are not meeting enlistment quotas. Do what you want with the information. It is only information.

Since, learning here yesterday that we can buy patriotism and freedom, I decided to quit worrying about it too. We can simply turn over our defense to well paid Gurkhas and $5,000 a month privates and go live in fantasyland.
