I don't think cruelty-free agriculture is a destination; it is a process including modifications to our practices and food preferences. In our house, we try to support sustainable agriculture. It is better for everyone in the long run. GM crops and industrial agriculture practices deplete the soil and cause the buildup of toxins. I'm not a fan of Monsanto trying to own the seed in perpetuity, for instance, or hiring lawyers to extract money from farmers whose fields have been contaminated by Monsanto product. Canadian courts have already granted Monsanto this right. Food production technology is not merely an invention in the traditional sense but a basic human right. There is an implied right to food and there is an implied responsibility to make it widely available. It's okay to be in the business of food production but there are limits to my willingness to let the food industry become a single-source supplier, or worse, master.
