In-Stat Predicts Worldwide DBS Market to Hit $3.2 Billion This Year ÿ 09/02/97 Business Wire (Copyright (c) 1997, Business Wire)
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 1997--In-Stat announced that it expects dramatic growth for digital DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) set top boxes due to burgeoning global demand. In 1996, the U.S. and Canada were the primary markets for digital DBS set top boxes.
However, in 1997, many new satellite transmission systems are being launched into space, opening up new DBS markets for Europe, Japan, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle-East.
"As a result of these new launches, the worldwide market for DBS set top boxes will be the start of the digital age of convergence technologies," said Gerry Kaufhold, Senior Analyst for In-Stat's Multimedia Service. "The major driving force behind this convergence will be MPEG -2 video and audio compression standards," Kaufhold added.
"Worldwide Markets for DBS Set Top Boxes: The Digital Age Arrives Here First!" No. MM9707CO, Kaufhold's new report for In-Stat's Multimedia Service, continues In-Stat's expanding coverage in the world of DBS Set Top Boxes. This 60-page report provides geographic data for North America, Europe, Japan, and ROW for Large Dish antenna systems with Analog Set Top Boxes, Small Dish antenna systems with Analog Set Top Boxes, Small Dish antenna systems with Digital Set Top Boxes, and Small Dish systems connected to Cable TV, or Cable Plus.
In-Stat expects the worldwide market for DBS set top boxes to grow from $3.2 Billion in 1997 to over $4 Billion in 1999 through 2000. During 2001, price reductions will reduce revenues to around $3.5 Billion. Kaufhold explained that while the dollar value for DBS set top boxes appears to be flat, it is disguising a hidden trend in the market. "Large, expensive dish systems which ship in the hundreds of thousands of units each year are being replaced by small, low-cost dish systems which will ship in millions of units per year."
The market dynamics that affect Set Top Boxes is rapidly changing.
