To the Editor:

I thought Thomas L. Friedman's column would teach me why Europe hates George W. Bush so much. What I learned instead is that many Europeans are like teenagers who have glimpsed the personal responsibilities of adulthood and don't want to grow up, while George Bush is the parent telling them they must.

America isn't exporting fear. We are spreading liberty. We haven't stopped greeting visitors. We're just more careful. We aren't imperialists invading peaceful countries. We are removing tyrants and freeing their people.

The problem is not with us. It is with Europeans who want a pre-9/11 world where a benign America rushes to help Europe whenever it calls.

The world changed on 9/11. Instead of whining about George Bush and the old America, Europeans need to grow up and start helping.
