You were griping about bribing patriotism. I agree that you can't buy patriotism with money.

You apparently have conceded that you can't coerce patriotism, either.

So, patriotism isn't what you are really looking for.

What you are really looking for are two things, which are actually not related.

You want service -- and you say, "coerce it," and I say, "if you give them a good enough incentive, they will volunteer."

You also want fairness. I don't think you'll ever see fairness when it comes to military service.

I do believe that being a soldier is one of the toughest jobs in the world, if not the very toughest. Rather than dragooning someone into that job, I'd rather try to persuade him by finding out what it takes to make him think it's worth his while.

Coercion ain't it.
