Saddam was not a fundamenalist. The Insurgent Sunnis are fundamentalists who did not care for Saddam but supported him because he was able to establish power and control over the Shi'ites. There are plenty of Sunnis who did not like Saddam, but they are also conflicted with having lost political status. The Kurds are mostly non-Arab Sunni Muslims.

More to it than just not liking Saddam. Fundamentalists like Zaraqawi will not agree to participate in a Shi'ite dominated government.
