I don't think New Zealand has much hope of joining the EU, unless much of the rest of the world does so at the same time. The very last thing the EU needs is a nations which produces food with a low cost basis. This is why Australia has made moves to establish closer trade relations with most Asian nations, including opening immigration from those Asian nations. They came to realize about twenty years ago that there was no place for Australia within the EU. So they believed they had to find a replacement for traditional markets like the UK. .
