Scott,

I'm still trying to sort through all the crap surrounding the clone issue. Sometimes I think we're in the a "War of Leaked Memos." Here's an excerpt from yesterdays' Macintouch, www4.macintouch.com:

"A reader tells us that all the "key players and architects of the PowerPC strategy" have left Motorola by now, and he details current problems ranging from executive politics to production of Mach 5 chips. A long-time Motorola employee also sent comments about the Apple situation (expressing some reservations about Victor Wong's letter):

"True, we built MOS13 primarly to produce PPC chips and the fab is doing so but they have been ramping other, non PPC parts recently. The sad fact is that there isn't enough of a demand for PPC to keep the factory full! As you may have heard, Hector Ruiz was recently appointed the head of the SPS sector. He has recently made several "anti-Mac" decrees. These include authorizing NT systems to replace Macs in Asia-Pacific and switching several large SPS groups to NT. These moves sadden me greatly. One the greatest joys of working at Moto is getting to use a Mac.

"If Motorola doesn't use its own technology, who will? I don't have inside info, but I do know the mood toward Apple and the licensing issue at Moto is souring quickly. After getting burned by MS (bet Intel had a hand in that!) with the PPC/NT PowerStack systems, the Motorola Computer Group really needed a hit. And so far they have one with the StarMax systems. Last quarter they actually posted a profit for the first time in my memory. In my opinion, Apple (Steve Jobs) is playing a VERY dangerous game with this assault on licensing."

Is Jobs really trying to bury Mac cloning or is he just playing hardball? Is mangement at Motorola so stupid that they take actions to hurt the PPC chip market?

I still think something will get worked out. I'm suspicious of the timing of the MOT "leak." I also think that the "leaked" confidential Apple memo is basically a negotiating ploy. We'll see.

Here's some more spin from MacWeek: www8.zdnet.com.
