Hi Larry,
My thinking here is that storage of electrical energy is what is desired for use at a later time..the more storage ..the better.I have a solar system with 8 lead acid battery's, when they are fully charged the potential electrical energy produced from solar panels is wasted it can not be stored. But it can.. either by making storage system bigger by adding more of granpa's clunker lead acid batterys..or adding Maxwells ultracapacitor module to it with a diode type device that would only charge the ultracapacitor when the battery's are full.Win, Win, situation because the Ultracapacitor is only charged when the battary's are fully charged thus I gain big time..unlike the clunker battery's the ultracapacitor never needs to be seviced and actually protects the lead acid bat'''s from heavy intial load draw downs.
In the example above substitute the lead acid battery's with VRB's energy storage system..the same would apply. When the ESS is fully charged the ultracap's would swallow up the excess...and release it first..What must be kept in mind is the Ultracapacitor's ..so far..are for short term high burst release of electrical energy not for storing large amounts of energy for long duration release..so my belief is the VRB ESS and ultracapacitor is a nice fit.
