Philips' Nexperia takes Samsung mobiles to the Edge
By John Walko - CommsDesign.com - Feb 01, 2005 LONDON — Samsung has started shipping Edge-compatible mobile phones that use Philips' Nexperia Cellular System Solution 6100, the first handsets to use the parts.
"Edge is really taking off in the US and Europe is not far behind despite a relatively slow start. However, operators are now convinced the technology will reduce data communications costs for them and their customers because of the big advantages it offers in spectral efficiency," said Herbert Blaser, marketing manager, high end communications systems at Philips Semiconductors. Blaser said many other handset makers are designing in the Nexperia 6100 range, and TCL/Alcatel is expected to have an Edge phone using its 6120 system sometime this year.
Validated for Edge class 10, the 6110 supports data transfers with fast downlink speeds of up to 220 kbit/s. It includes an ARM9 baseband and the LifeVibes Multimedia suite that makes it possible to stream 3GPP or MPEG4 files in 15 frames per second in quarter common image format (QCIF), making it ideal for TV on mobile.
The Nexperia Cellular System incorporates a quad band class 12-capable Edge chipset, including cellular baseband, RF SiP, power amplifier and power management unit, integrated discretes and software. Hardware extensions include a mobile image processor, FM radio, and Bluetooth 1.2 module.
Blaser said designers can add a UMTS subsystem to the Nexperia range to upgrade to the so called 'W-Edge' 3G solution. Last week Agere Systems said it started sampling a dual mode UMTS/Edge baseband chip set and software as part of its Sceptre range.
