SAMSys Selected To Supply Readers and OEM Modules for WS Packaging Group's RFID Business
Modules Will Provide Inspection and Encoding for Firm's EPC Tag/Label Applicators
TORONTO, Feb. 1 /CNW/ - SAMSys Technologies Inc. (SMY: TSX) today announced a reseller agreement for its fixed and embedded radio frequency identification (RFID) readers with WS Packaging Group - Automated Systems, a division of WS Packaging Group Inc.'s $270 million printing and label converting business. WS Packaging selected SAMSys equipment primarily because of a patented open architecture that can read and write to multiple RFID tag protocols, enabling consumer packaged goods companies and other RFID adopters to use the tags of their choice. The reseller agreement authorizes WS Packaging to resell SAMSys' fixed MP9320 UHF Long-Range Readers to customers undergoing RFID implementations, including several early adopters who have recently deployed the units to comply with Wal-Mart mandates. The readers' multiprotocol technology gives users complete flexibility in tag selection as well as the ability to migrate to newer tag designs in the future without being forced to change their hardware. The agreement also calls for WS Packaging to embed SAMSys' new MP9310 Low Power UHF Reader Modules into its IntTag(TM) EPC encoder/ case tag applicators and high speed read verify labelers. The SAMSys modules will inspect tags to be sure they are readable and then encode them with the appropriate data before the IntTag machine applies them to cases or pallets. In addition to its use with label applicators like WS Packaging's, the MP9310 reader module can be incorporated into barcode printers, printer applicators, and other devices requiring UHF tag programming and reading. It supports tags tuned at FCC, European and proposed Japanese UHF frequency bands; and can encode and read all major UHF tag protocols including EPC Class 0/0+, EPC Class 1, ISO 18000-6A and 6B, Philips UCODE and EPC 1.19, Intermec Intellitag(TM), EM 4022, 4222 and 4223, Atmel and others. It is also compatible with proposed Generation 2 EPC standards with a simple software upgrade. "SAMSys' technology is enabling us to build label applicator solutions that are capable of inserting all types of RFID tags. At case packaging speeds, we can singulate and encode EPC Class 1 pressure sensitive inlays on pitch, or we can verify and apply tags at speeds of up to 250 tags a minute and still get rid of defective tags," said Dave Uland, Application Development Manager with WS Packaging Group. "Our customers want a scalable solution they can implement on the packaging line, not a manual slap and ship line, and SAMSys has the technical depth and flexibility to help us meet that objective." "WS Packaging Group is one of the giants of the label manufacturing industry, so their selection of both our fixed and OEM readers is another important step in securing SAMSys' position as the supplier of choice for RFID reader hardware," said Cliff Horwitz, chairman, CEO and president of SAMSys Technologies Inc. "Our broad tag protocol support, our ability to easily adapt to new standards, our high performance, and special features such as field upgradeability for remotely updating reader hardware are combining to give us a strong competitive edge in the emerging RFID marketplace."
