Evangelical leader thinks evolution more dangerous than anything. Ever.

AgapePress, the propaganda machine of the American Family Association, published an article about the "Defending the Faith" conference. The meeting is designed to teach people how to defend their faith in an "anti-Christian culture." One of the ideas which much be attacked, of course, is evolution. It's a subject where the top-billed speaker, Dr. D. James Kennedy, holds some controversial views:

It is Kennedy's opinion that Christians who embrace evolution are compromising their faith. He describes evolution as the most destructive idea ever to enter the mind of man, and a concept that has killed more people than all religions that ever existed.

"Communistic evolution, according to the Senate committee that examined it, is responsible for 135 million deaths in peacetime," he said. "There's no religion that has a tiny fraction of that many deaths on it conscience." And it is amazing, he added, that evolution – despite its widespread acceptance – has no scientific basis. "There are scientists who will admit that there's not one iota of scientific evidence to support it."

Kennedy is self-described as "the most listened-to Presbyterian minister in the world today" claiming his messages are "televised from the nearly 10,000-member Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale to 40,000 cities and towns across the United States and nearly 200 nations." And just to be clear, his view is that evolution is the most destructive idea out there. Ever. Period. Evolution is more destructive than, say, terrorism. It's more destructive than "the axis of evil." More destructive than thoughts of the "Master Race" which sent more than 11 million people to their carefully coordinated deaths. More destructive than ideas of Empire which have claimed countless millions across many centuries. More destructive than ideas of ethic, racial or religious purity which have caused and continue to cause much death and suffering around the world.

Much of America voted for Bush because they thought he would do a better job keeping them safe from terrorists. Well, the group which openly claims to have delivered the victory to Bush thinks otherwise. This group sees not terrorism as the enemy. They don't even see poverty as the enemy. Or ruthless dictators. To protect America, they will attack evolution, same-sex marriage and reproductive rights first and foremost. That is their priority, and I do not think that is what mainstream America ever intended.
