Nothing galls me more than people saying that some race or religion isn't compatible with democracy and freedom Well, whether it galls you or not, a strict interpretation of most religions WILL BE at odds with democracy and freedom. For example, if the pope says condoms are against Catholic rules, but the nation-state says condoms are legal, how do you get around that? The manufacture, distribution and usage of condoms is AGAINST the religion, but the democratically elected legislators allow them. Supporting the democratic nation state's rules results in anti-religious laws. The only way to avoid that outcome is to have the religious leaders make the laws, but that's not the structure of the modern day nation-state system. That's why Nietschze said "God is dead", I believe.
