The flu shot will probably not do much. The pandemic vaccine made against the 1997 H5N1 doesn't work well, so H1N1 and H3N2 will be pretty useless.

In 1918 young people were targeted because of prior immunity of othe age groups. In 2005 the fatality ratio is similar for all age groups, but there may be a difference between north and south Vietnam right now. However, the virus in the asymptomatic ducks is spreading quickly, and new versions may emerge to blur those differences (and possibly reduce the effectiveness of the pandemic vaccine under development).
