China raises local content quota for nuclear power plants - report
Xinhua Financial News (January 26, 2005)

HONG KONG, Jan 21, 2005 (XFN-ASIA via COMTEX) -- China has said that 70 pct of components for the Ling Ao nuclear power plant in southern China's Guangdong province must be made locally as part of an effort to develop a domestic nuclear power industry, the Financial Times reported.

In its online edition, the newspaper said the requirement for the second phase of the Ling Ao plant reflects Beijing's desire for China's nuclear power industry to become more self-sufficient.

When the initial phase of Ling Ao began in 1997 only 30 pct of components needed to be produced locally, the newspaper said.

China's efforts to localize follow those of Japan and Korea whose nuclear energy industries were originally built on western technology but are now "largely self sufficient," the newspaper said, citing the World Nuclear Association.

Considering the huge scope for development of China's nuclear power industry, foreign companies will not be easily deterred though. The nine reactors in China supply less than two pct of the country's electricity.

Authorities plan to build at least 24 nuclear power plants by 2020 to cope with rising demand, the newspaper said.
