It's no secret that China has been trying to develop its own semiconductor industry. Front-end semiconductor equipment purchases grew a whopping 146% to $2.83 billion in 2004. However, with semiconductor demand easing this year, so will chip equipment purchases in China.

Robert Castellano, president of research firm, The Information Network, says that as a result of cuts in capital spending by major semiconductor companies in China, chip equipment sales will drop 33.6% to $1.88 billion.
