Rate of Economic Growth Slowed Last Quarter

The rate of economic growth, one of the biggest mover of stock prices, is actually moving in the wrong direction. Analysts had been expecting fourth quarter 2004 growth to be a healthy 4%, or slightly better. Instead, numbers released last week show the economy grew only 3.1% during the three month period. As we know the number is subject to change but the shortfall was too large to be attributed to normal quarter-to-quarter variation or a statistical error. Growth shrank nearly a full percentage point, a 22.5% change.
