You can end up being very surprised by the benefits you gain with the nolock hint. As Dave pointed out, there are some costs (dirty data fetched mid-transaction, for example) but they're a comparatively small price to pay and if using the hint makes your query run quickly enough, dirty data is less likely.

I first ran into it on iHub and was very surprised at the overhead and time it saved on really large queries.
