If the letters were chosen at random and you could not use the same letter more than once, the first letter could be chosen from any of the 26, the second from the remaining 25, and the third from the remaining 24. 26*25*24. as you said there are 1*2*3 ways to arrange the letters. So the odds of correctly picking the 3 letters are 26*25*24/1*2*3 or 1 in 2600.

The same odds as winning a pick 3 lottery with 26 numbers.

Now if the letters must be in the same order as the old boyfriends name, there is only 1 way to arrange the letters (not six). So the odds of randomly picking 3 letters in the correct order are 26*25*24/1 or 1 in 15600.
