Kansas Abortion Clinic, Hotel Firm at Odds
Fri Feb 4, 2005 06:02 PM ET

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Texas-based hotel chain La Quinta Corp. has told a Kansas abortion clinic it cannot perform medical services in its rooms and to stop using its name in promotional literature.

The hotel firm took the action after the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue last month called for a national boycott of La Quinta because of its relationship with a Wichita clinic run by Dr. Richard Tiller.

Operation Rescue said Tiller was placing patients in a La Quinta hotel in Wichita and providing nurses for them there after terminating their pregnancies.

La Quinta spokeswoman Teresa Ferguson said on Friday the Irving, Texas-based firm had not given permission to use any of its hotels for medical treatment and informed the clinic of that.

But La Quinta will not turn customers away simply because they are Tiller patients, Ferguson said.

"We cannot discriminate against guests."

A Tiller spokeswoman would not comment on the matter.

Ferguson said La Quinta also had found the clinic was using its name in promotional literature and asked it to stop.

"We just felt that it was probably a place we shouldn't be. We don't have a partnership or relationship with them."

Operation Rescue outreach coordinator Cheryl Sullenger said the group called for a boycott because it thought La Quinta was collaborating with the Tiller clinic, but had ended the action because of the company's actions.
