Dean's world - Uh, Oh....Brace Yourself...

By Joe Gandelman

...Hollywood feels enough time has passed and they're going to start producing dramas about 911:

Los Angeles - Three-and-a-half years after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, Hollywood executives believe the American public is ready to view movies and dramatic TV series based on the traumatic events.

The producers of "Meet The Fockers" will make a film about intelligence service bigwigs' work before 911. It'll be called "Meet the Fockups." But we digress:

According to Daily Variety, Columbia Pictures is in advanced negotiations to acquire screen rights to 102 Minutes, a newly published book by New York Times reporters Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn, which examines the disaster from the vantage point of those trapped inside the World Trade Centre buildings.

The title refers to the 102 minutes that passed between the time that the first plane slammed in to the tower at 08:46 and the tower's collapse at 10:28.

The book features tales of both heroism and incompetence, including deficiencies in building construction and disaster preparedness, flaws that ranged from a lack of fire-resistant staircases to turf battles between cops and firemen.

But 102 Minutes also illustrates the sacrifices and heroism of ordinary people and rescuers to get nearly 12 000 people out of the buildings before their collapse.

Our sources tell us Hollywood decided to pursue 102 Minutes after rejecting a movie about Bob Dole's pre-Viagra sex life — One And A Half Minutes.

In all seriousness: Hollywood producers will be walking on egghshells on this one. If they produce films that take too many liberties with history, they'll be blasted. Casting will have to be dignified, using actors who aren't too typed or who haven't become parodies of themselves.

Our modest message to Hollywood: Don't hire Oliver Stone to do any of the 911 movies.
