Kerry stand doesn't fit history

Feb. 6, 2005 12:00 AM

Sen. John Kerry said, "It is hard to say that something is legitimate when whole portions of the country can't vote and doesn't vote."

By Kerry's logic, and that of many other Democrats, it's time to rewrite our history books.

In 1864, 13 states did not take part in the federal election. The federal government did not recognize the secession of the 13 Southern states and considered them as still part of the United States. Therefore, President Lincoln's re-election could not, nor that of the Congress, be considered "legitimate."

In 1872, three states refused to participate, another "illegitimate" election. In fact, since women (a large portion of the country) did not have the vote for the first 150 years, and Blacks (a large portion of the country) did not have a true opportunity to vote until the 1960s, it is only recently that the United States has had "legitimate" elections. - Jim Kimmins, Phoenix
