It's very romantic to think that as individuals our freedom is attributable to the force of arms, but if one looks at it objectively the romantic notion has very little basis in fact.

To the extent persons have lacked freedom in the United States, it has been attributable to internal factors, not external factors. Conqueroring hordes did not keep black Americans enslaved, did not force native americans onto reservations, and did not deprive women of the right to vote or own property. These were decisions made internally.

Given that for most of its history the United States has been a huge, largely empty territory with abundant natural resources, the logistical difficulty of occupying it and oppressing its citizens is overwhelming.

There are many reasons for the wars the U.S. has fault, but protecting our right to travel and speak freely are not among them.
