The greatest impediment to freedom is when a society doesn't value it enough to stand up for their rights on the home front. Communist Chinese and communist Russians were not enslaved from abroad, but by their own people. Blacks in this country, and Native Americans, immigrant Chinese, Irish, Polish, and Japanese, were persecuted by the people who live here. The greatest danger to any democracy are its own people destroying it from within, imo. You can be strong against outside aggression, and still be free and democratic, but it is in times of danger (or manufactured danger) that those who would take our freedoms from us act, and they act in the guise of "protecting" us.
