Once you need 4 way + UNIX based system Sun is still the best choice imho in terms of RAS. Until that point your right that PC hardware and Linux is a cheaper choice offering same operational costs.

Another movement working against Sun is J2EE server technology which supports clustering natively; i.e. Weblogic/Websphere. These products provide the ability to cluster multiple machines together reducing the need to go for the big server fix. To top it off IBM Websphere consultants/sales are right there in the customer office suggesting AIX/IBM hardware to run the system.

Sun is increasingly being forced back to re-examine their core value as the choosen provider of reliable/scalable 4+ way solutions. That's what they need to focus on to differentiate from the rest of the competition imho.
