The shape of peace is so easy to outline -- as you do sow ell. I hope there is the political will to succeed. As you know, I am not impressed with the tit-for-tat approach that so easily derails any real progress

What will make the difference is the degree of good faith that each side assesses the other to have. If they think there is some degree of good faith, even if imperfect, there will be patience in the leadership to work through the crises. What destroyed everything before was the (correct) conclusion on part of Israelis across the board that Arafat was acting in complete bad faith, and that desperate attempts to make him keep faith in spite of his own desires were doomed.

With Abu Mazen, there is the recognition that he would actually like to stop the violence and start rebuilding the Palestinian economy, even if the Israelis are dissatisfied with his proposed method of getting cooperation from the terrorist groups, which is to cajole them. Push will come to shove when Hamas uses the truce to rebuild and Israel asks Abu Mazen what he intends to do about it.
