I see. Powerful motivation then for the Israelis to continue to occupy the West Bank. I was wondering why Sharon was eager to evacuate Gaza, but not the West Bank. Now it's a little clearer. Still, if he values peace, he needs to force the extremist Jews to allow and evacuation of the West Bank.

Well, then you have to connect some of the other dots. Who was the one that started the building boom of settlements in the West Bank in the late 1980s? Sharon was the Minister of Housing then and he was the prime instigator. Who has said repeatedly on national Israeli TV as recently as two years ago that the Palestinians will never have their own state? Sharon.

Extremist Jews? Sharon's party, the Likud, is peppered with extremist Jews. He could only do so much even if he were playing fair. And frankly, given the evidence above, I don't think he is playing fair. The West Bank also houses East Jerusalem. The Israelis feel very strongly about keeping East Jerusalem for themselves.
