Conservative thought has long rated the notion of "root causes" -- explaining antisocial behavior as a consequence of social conditions -- as a major heresy.

Not really. The only thing that would be heresy (to the extent that the word has any usefulness here) would be that the root causes excuse the behavior.

Also many conservatives might disagree with particular claimed root causes or consider them to be only secondary factors.
