I was wondering why Sharon was eager to evacuate Gaza, but not the West Bank. I wouldn't se surprised if the mid to long term plan is to evacuate Gaza but not the West Bank, and then try to split the Palestinian refugees by promoting an independent country called Gaza, which is separate from the West Bank. Then over the long term Israel can "encourage" all the West Bank Palestinians to immigrate to Gaza since they don't have a country in the West Bank. Just one theory. I don't think the Gaza land has as much strategic or religious importance as the West Bank area.
