Mahmoud Abbas is his given name, and Abu Mazen is his nom de guerre... many Arab leaders tend to have them.

Arafat's was "Abu Amar." There's also Ahmed Qureia, who was the PM under Arafat for a short time -- his nom de guerre is "Abu Ala." I don't know any others.
