JF, OF COURSE we're worried about seniors living in poverty, that's what this is all about. You want to set up a welfare system? Where does the money come from? Won't that discourage savings?

How is the current system encouraging savings? If anything, the current system is discouraging savings, simply because most people think their SS taxes are going into the mythical "lockbox."

If it's all about preventing poverty among our seniors, let's pay for that out of the general budget. At least revenues from there come from a progressive income tax structure. SS, on the other hand, is a regressive tax. Change it to a progressive tax, and you might as well just blend SS into the actual budget.
