I forwarded this to my old friend Bob who lives in Fremont, CA. He is a very knowledgeable person and said he read something about the Kosher marking years ago but had clue this could be such a big scam. After a while this is what he wrote to me:

Old naive Bob went into his own pantry to look for the
U and K. I found it only on canned food items. About
half of them. But no other places, like dry and
frozen items. Also not on any paper and plastic items
that are used in food preparation.

Of course this is far from being a scientific or
thorough test, but so far it doesn't look too much
in support of the claims.

I also talked to my wife in San Diego who immediately replied that "I have no intention to pay extra for any kosher marking" and now I am waiting for her reports from shopping as well.
