IBM's MTST was in use in 1970 because I used one. Wrote to tape. Didn't have proportional fonts, though

From a technical stand point, the tapes you wrote to could be read and the information could be stored somewhere else where it could be printed using a device with proportional spacing.

If you still had those tapes, you could print out the contents today using laser printers, color fonts, and in three dimensions. Not a big deal.
