Google is quite simply the most dominant company of the day.

Here's a simple question...

If tomorrow there appears to be a better, more efficient, more accurate search engine than Google, say over at www.betterthangoogle.com, would you click over there and give it a try? If it worked better than Google, would you keep using it? I would. Why not?

If tomorrow there appears to be a better operating system than Windows (some say it's already here in Linux), would you give it a try? I wouldn't, simply because of all the effort it would take. Perhaps I might buy a new PC with the new system on it, but not for several years until I knew it was stable enough to support all the new hardware and software. Corporate America certainly wouldn't switch for quite a long time because of all the support services they'd have to switch as well. That goes for the Office suite of products as well.

The point being that Google hangs on a much more tenuous thread than Microsoft. While I agree it might take a Google competitor some time to amass the hardware and content caching needed to successfully compete with Google, they could do quite well draining off ad revenues and customers pretty quickly. Just look at what happened to Yahoo. However, what Google does have going for it is their innovation. That's why Google won't be going away as a company any time soon.

- Jeff
