I agree they need a cheap, reliable low maintenance low to mid-end server product. A cheap black-box that is a great all-round 1-4 way server. Haven't read much on the hot boxes but it sound like they are geared to that.

High-end is still where they differentiate themselves from the UNIX competition ... they need to continue to plug away at that as well.

Software wise in the application server realm I think all is lost albeit there is a market for a leaner/meaner J2EE like platform but I doubt Sun would come to the market with that in-time and free versions of Tomcat/JBOSS are filling that currently. Companies like Systinet have found a niche as all the big players find it hard to keep up with web service standards ... this is exactly the product SUNW SHOULD have come out with - after all they had the WS toolkits already.

I see more downsizing in the future for SUNW to become profitable again.
