It is a real sacrifice to have one parent at home with more than a $1MM of lost income potential to the family (for professionals, anyway). I want to think that it is worth it...

While kids may have all this internal benefit of being raised by mom, it isn't obvious how that manifests. Certainly they get into less trouble and they benefit by being around a highly educated person who cares for them. Compare this to the default treatment in organized day care. But, it the difference night-and-day? I just don't know.

The ONLY generation that had non-working, stay-at-home moms was the Baby Boomers. Those mothers mostly left the kids outside while they ironed, cleaned, cooked and watched soap operas. These kids brought you the 60's and 70's. Before that, mothers were WORKING THEIR @SS OFF in the home with no appliances and conveniences. Hanging out with baby doing Hooked on Phoenics wasn't in the cards.
