I liked Gun, Germs and Steel. A bit sweeping in its conclusions (can you really say that the New World was badly disadvantaged in its food pyramid and animals available for domestication, and that this disadvantage accounted for its cultural backwardness compared to Eurasia? I don't think so), but an interesting angle from which to take a big picture analysis, not one that has been done before to my knowledge.
