I think the terrorist that pull off large operations, or pull off operations on the other side of the world from their original home and/or from where they where trained tend to be more educated and from a wealthier background. Those that strap on a suicide bomber's vest or who grab a rifle and take a few pot shots at local civilians who they consider the enemy tend to not be so educated.

Perhaps a combination. Perhaps it depends on local conditions.

My point has been that Sageman as far as I know is the only person who has tried to gather hard empirical data on the AQ-related terrorists. Because his findings were a bit surprising, I think it is best to withhold judgment on the motivations and backgrounds of other groups of terrorists.

There has been very little hard data on these issues. Until we have it, any analysis and therefore any response runs the risk of being dead wrong. I think Sageman has taken a terrific step in the right direction. Is it complete or all-encompassing? Clearly not.

As far as Iraq is concerned, we know that there has been an influx of jihadis from all over the Muslim world but I don't think that we know much about their backgrounds. Data will give us a much better idea of whose these guys are and, therefore, insight into how best to deter or fight them.
