re: He's paid in enough Social Security (40 quarters) to get it..and while the "pay in" was low. Now in his mid 50's...in another 7 to 10 years he'll start to collect. In 2042 he'll be in his 90's and likely won't care anyway...meanwhile he'll have collected much more than he paid in.

I've been working since I was 14 (summers). And if I live to 90, I might get more than I paid in. But I don't expect to live to 90. I figure it will end up I pay in for 51 years and collect for ~20, at least that's what the actuaries tell me.

I also figure I've got about 780 rounds of golf left in my life... got to break 80 one more time, and it's not getting any easier.
