Train travel in Japan and Europe is a little different. Please consider the distances. In Japan flying up and down is ridiculous. I have been a few parabolic flights (because of the short distances, not the vomit comet). They are not usually practical. The routes I took then are mostly gone now.

The 2 trains from LA to Chi will cause way more disruption to the traditional value communities between them than the loss of 11 LA to SD routes will to those Blue Blood communities. Bus routes are far more flexible and can change to suit the changing communities served.

As you observed, tracks are stationary, and cannot move to suit population shifts.

With Greyhound or Continental, there are other bus companies or airlines that will pick up the slack.

I read that a Chinese company was running some abandoned routes with different company names on the placard, phone and bus. Some job of picking up. Would you blue blooders tolerate that kind of train service? BTW - You're not going far on a train without crossing some of those supposed abandoned traditional value state routes.

Here is my comment. I oppose any kind of subsidy. Farm, Air, Train, etc.

Did you know that the highest cost per thousand passenger miles of any transportation subsidy is for trains? I think it is $185. Inner city busses are subsidized over $105. Airplanes receive much less, and highway traffic pays in over $1.85.
