Taser Shares Fall Following CBS Report on Study Linking Stun Gun to Heart Damage in Pigs

PHOENIX (AP) -- Shares of Taser International Inc. fell nearly 4 percent Thursday following a media report that an Air Force study found multiple shocks from a Taser stun gun led to heart damage in pigs.

CBS reported that it obtained a study that found that repeated shocks from a Taser stun gun "led to heart damage in pigs." The study found a jump in the enzyme Troponin-T. It also found the pigs had high levels of blood acid, which is a potentially life-threatening condition, CBS reported.

In a statement to CBS, Taser was critical of the Air Force's use of 18 shocks in the test, calling it "extreme." The manufacturer also claimed that test results from the pigs are similar to what would be expected from strong physical exertion.

Taser referred questions about the study from The Associated Press to the statement released to CBS.

A summary of a Department of Defense-ordered study released in October claimed the devices are "generally safe and effective." It said that although there were risks for "severe unintended effects," those incidents were unlikely to be common. However, the Defense Department would not release the complete report.

Taser shares fell 55 cents, or 3.7 percent, to close at $14.42 Thursday on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Its shares traded as high as $33.45 late last year.

Touted as less lethal than other ways of subduing combative people in high-risk situations, Tasers are used by more than 7,000 law enforcement agencies worldwide, as well as the U.S. military. But the safety of the electricity-shooting weapon has come under fire by human rights groups as a number of deaths have been blamed, at least partially, on the devices.
