All I know is what I'm told, and I've heard from 2 very good people that I know well at Google that they are having trouble hiring the people they want. But I believe that they do have very high standards -- it's certainly what I've seen in the "hired" vs. "not hired" among the people that I know (although I have seen them make some mistakes in the "not hired" case, too).

I don't know Pike or Bosworth, but I have also heard that hiring big shots hasn't worked perfectly for Google, either. And my experience is similar -- big shots can be easy to justify when hiring, but they often want to tell other people what to do instead of doing actual work.
