While the ondie MC of Opteron does have advantages, there are drawbacks as well.

1) Any advances in memory technology require a respin of the processor to move to new memories.

2) Localized memory causes problems in multi-processor systems where snoops must transverse hops to maintain cache coherency. This slows things down waiting for snoop responses.

Meanwhile Intel's ability to produce large cache processors goes a long way to reduce bus traffic while allowing snoops to take place in real time. Also Intel will soon be introducing new chipset designs that will dramatically improve memory bandwidth.
