My job involves transitioning from development to production, which is largely an "organic" and not well-planned process. Ideally, you would want everything thought out in advance. Frequently 1st generation changes are precisely the hack-job you describe, though. I bet the prototype automatic transmission was actuators built on top of a manual transmission core. Why wouldn't you limit the engineering when trying a new idea? I have a circuit board being moved into a production tester that has only parts of the function enabled (it came out of development). I don't believe in a God coming down and imbuing inanimate objects with life, but I wouldn't rule out a quantum mechanical "desire" for sustaining systems.

Do you remember the Volkswagen Automatic Shift? It was precisely such a hack-job transmission. Certainly other transmissions use much of the same core in terms of planetary gear systems and what not.
