Medtronic warns on certain defibrillator models By Jennifer Inez Ward
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Medtronic Inc. (MDT: news, chart, profile) said late Thursday that it is voluntarily advising physicians about a potential battery shorting mechanism that may occur in a subset of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator models. The Minneapolis-based medical products company said that nine of its batteries, or 0.01 percent, have experienced rapid depletion due to the shorting action, which can result in the device not working. There are no reports of patient injuries or deaths, the company said. According to the company, devices with batteries manufactured between April 2001 and December 2003 may exhibit shorting action. About 75 percent of devices with potentially affected batteries were implanted in the United States, the company said.
