Re: How to turn Pacer documents into Word text files

Pacer filings are often images, as opposed to text, and often displayed using a custom viewer, as opposed to being pdf files suitable for viewing in Acrobat. This makes it impossible to cut and paste text or save the file directly into a format from which it can be converted. So a little ingenuity is needed.

The following steps will quickly and easily convert Pacer documents into Word text files.

1. In Pacer, select the option to print "all" the pages.

2. When the printer dialogue box appears, change the printer to "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer", and "print" the document.

3. Once the printing is completed, the Microsoft MDI software utility should pop up displaying the pages as if you had just scanned them. Click on the "W" (Word) icon in the tool bar to save the document in Word format. Leave the default option to save the images as well as yes. The software will then employ OCR to convert whatever it can to text; the rest will be saved as images.

4. The quality of the conversion will depend on the quality of the text on the documents. Edit the Word doc to assure the result is as readable as you desire.
