My comment is, "If it was 'off the record' why did the Davos people tape it in the first place?"

Eason Jordan Resigns

By Cori Dauber

And that's without the tape being released? It does make you wonder what would have happened if the tape had come out.

Reuters isn't exactly forthcoming about the details of what went into all this.

Round-up of comments here.

I'm surprised by this, I have to say. To be perfectly honest, while I'm very bothered by this story, bothered by Jordan's behavior after (I agree with Reynold's and others' comments about stonewalling after being attacked after something like this), and bothered by the unwillingness to call for the tape to come out, I still think that CNN's behavior, under Jordan's direction, during the twelve years when they kept a bureau in Baghdad by playing footsie with Saddam was far, far worse.

That should have been a firing offense, but of course then he was following network policy. That the media establishment didn't land on CNN with both feet for that one still amazes me. This case remains more ambiguous because the transcript/tape isn't available.

So why aren't they calling for the release of the tape?

The repetition of the claim of the Davos people that the panel was "off the record" bothers me. That seems to be an after-the-fact conclusion they came to when it was convenient, not something made clear to participants ahead of time, so it's a way of simultaneously locking up the tape and smearing the bloggers who brought this to people's attention.
